If the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has its way, BDA multiplex tickets for the first few rows be priced at just Rs 49. The BDA has issued pre-qualification tenders to convert its complexes into malls at Indiranagar, Domlur, Austin Town, RT Nagar, Vijayanagar and RMV mini market.

The tenders say multiplexes are compulsory in all malls. But the BDA is not yet calling them malls. “These are 20- to 30-year-old buildings and are being reconstructed,” BDA commissioner Bharat Lal Meena said.

When asked about making multiplexes compulsory, he said, “These are done depending on local requirements.” Sources said the multiplex idea came from Bangalore incharge minister R Ashok.

Once they pass the pre-qualification stage, they will be issued master plans for the new malls. The tenders were issued on May 20.

Garbage collectors in HAL 3rd stage Thippasandra come around 11 in the morning daily and collect garbage dumped in allotted places. But even after they collect waste, the area is seen littered with garbage packets.

On a complaint by Rise III (Residents Initiative for Safe Environment), Cityplus went on a survey and was surprised to see that that even after the allotted time, people come and throw garbage on the road showing disregard for the whole garbage collection system.

“Residents need to understand their responsibility towards society and cleanliness,” said Jaya Kukreja, a resident.
There is a fixed place for dumping garbage in every area and collectors come on time and collect garbage from each house. But in 6th Cross 4th Main HAL 3rd stage, residents from different crosses or mains come to the neighbourhood and throw garbage in front of homes or sometimes on the main road. No one bothered to walk till the garbage dumping place and throw garbage there.

Piled-up garbage is enough to spoil residents’ morning coffee. Even after trying hard to keep the locality clean, residents are not co-operating.

“A woman from some other cross will daily come and throw her garbage in front of our home. Even after repeated warnings, she continued with her daily dumping. Can’t she walk little further and dump it in designated place,” asked Jaya.

Vijaylakshmi, principal of the school, complained to BBMP about the issue several times but there has been no response to date. The owner of the site is not taking any responsibility either. The school principal tried calling up the owner but he does not reply and is not ready to come up with any solution.

The accumulation of waste in the area also attracts stray dogs, which is posing a threat to the young children. Parents who come to drop their children have to bear the unbearable stench from these garbage heaps. Students and people have spotted several rats also in the plot.

Huge tree branches fell on three cars and damaged them at Corporation Circle, HAL 2nd Stage and ESI Hospital in Indiranagar.

No injuries or casualties were reported due to the crushing of cars.

One girl was injured at Jeevan Bhimanagar when the branch of an uprooted tree hit her while falling. She was playing near her residence after the heavy showers when the incident happened. The injured girl was taken to a nearby private hospital.

The roads are full of potholes filled up with rain water. Now, the most daunting task faced by the residents is sewage water getting mixed with water stored in sumps.

“The problem of sewage water getting mixed with drinking water and overflowing manholes is making life miserable for us,” said a resident of 6th Main.

Recently, in 14th Main, an elderly woman saw the worst of rain as her whole home was inundated with water from the drains. As she stays alone, she was helpless and clueless what to do in such a situation.

When Cityplus contacted her, she said that despite repeated requests to the authorities to clear debris which blocked the drains near her house, there was no response. The whole drainage system in the area is blocked by construction debris left unattended on the sides of the drains.

Mosquito-ridden

Visit any residents of HAL and Indiranagar, you will find most of them are down with viral fever and other mosquito-borne diseases as stagnant water on the roads has become breeding ground for mosquitoes.

In Michel Playa, the problem was temporarily solved when the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) workers cleared the clogged drains, but it did not last too long. The heavy showers last week again washed the muck kept on the sides of the drain back to the drains.

The sewer lines of the area are more than 45 years old and inadequate to bear the volume of sewage, especially from the huge apartments in and around Indiranagar.

The situation is the worst in the mornings in areas like 4th Main, 6th Cross, HAL III stage when pressure on the sewer lines is at the highest.

Despite repeated complaints from the public, the Palike said they could not do anything as it is the rainy season.
Residents say a ride on this road with mini craters all around is a bone-jarring experience for motorists.

Even major roads in Indiranagar, Domlur, HAL and Thippasanda are not spared; all have potholes of varying sizes. The potholes have also worsened the chronic traffic jams the area witnesses.

“It is with great difficulty that people like us drive on these roads, these potholes filled with rain water is dangerous for drivers. The government needs to take immediate action on this,” says a daily commuter.

Officials of BBMP said even if they wanted to get the potholed roads repaired before monsoon, funds would be a problem.
